SANTA FE, New Mexico - The City Different

Santa Fe, New Mexico is the oldest capital city in North America and also the oldest European city west of the Mississippi.  Santa Fe is the site of both the oldest public building in America, the Palace of the Governors:, and the nation's oldest community celebration, the Santa Fe Fiesta, established in 1712 to remember the Spanish reconquest of New Mexico in the summer of 1692.  The city has been the capital for the Spanish "Kingdom of New Mexico," the Mexican province of Nuevo Mexico, the American territory of New Mexico (which contained what is today Arizona and New Mexico) and since 1912 the state of New Mexico.

Two mysteries surround the spiral staircase in the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe: the identity of its builder and the physics of its construction.

When the Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft twenty-two feet above. Carpenters were called in to address the problem, but they all concluded access to the loft would have to be via ladder as a staircase would interfere with the interior space of the small Chapel.

Legend says that to find a solution to the seating problem, the Sisters of the Chapel made a novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth and final day of prayer, a man appeared at the Chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. Months later, the elegant circular staircase was completed, and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. After searching for the man (an ad even ran in the local newspaper) and finding no trace of him, some concluded that he was St. Joseph himself, having come in answer to the sisters' prayers.

The stairway's carpenter, whoever he was, built a magnificent structure. The design was innovative for the time and some of the design considerations still perplex experts today.

The staircase has two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support. Also, it is said that the staircase was built without nails...only wooden pegs. Questions also surround the number of stair risers relative to the height of the choir loft and about the types of wood and other materials used in the stairway's construction.

    A marvelous way to cook

Posted by Scott Hallenberg on 15th Nov 2019

I was looking for a one cooking dish solution for some upcoming overland adventures and stumbled across this disk. I love the large shallow wok design when allows you to cook an entire meal all in one disc my moving food into and out of the heat while also keeping everything warm. Since I just got this 3 days ago, I put it to the test with breakfast burritos. I loved how I could start with the sausage and then move it up on the sides where it continue to cook at a slower rate . I added tortillas to the sides where they warmed. Then I added eggs to the hotter center. Once they were ready, I slide the sausage back to the center to mix with the eggs and added cheese on top. (Adding veggies would have been easy to add if I'd only had some on hand.) Next, I slid the tortillas on onto my plate with the egg/ sausage /cheese cook to perfection. I wiped out the disc, turned up the heat, added some oil and let it burn off just to have another layer of seasoning and ready for the next meal. I love how it's easy clean for next use, ability to handle a lot of ingredients all at once which is ideal for outdoor camp cooking for small or large groups. I'll add some pictures after my next camping trip so besure check out this link soon: https://www.surfandsnowcountryimages.com/Photo-Essays/Photo-Essays

i have been looking for this type of item for years. When it arrived immediately cooked up some bacon and sausage. We took it camping the same weekend. We cooked a full breakfast, grilled cheese for lunch, we even have made hot wings. it is every thing that i expected. I wish i could post some pictures of the great food we cooked on our disc. I bought this for a friend and he was blown away by the quality and the utility of this cooker. We are planning to use it at the camp as well as at home on a propane burner. Exactly what I was looking for. I will be back to get myself one soon. This looks as though it will last generations!
