SANTA FE, New Mexico - The City Different

Santa Fe, New Mexico is the oldest capital city in North America and also the oldest European city west of the Mississippi.  Santa Fe is the site of both the oldest public building in America, the Palace of the Governors:, and the nation's oldest community celebration, the Santa Fe Fiesta, established in 1712 to remember the Spanish reconquest of New Mexico in the summer of 1692.  The city has been the capital for the Spanish "Kingdom of New Mexico," the Mexican province of Nuevo Mexico, the American territory of New Mexico (which contained what is today Arizona and New Mexico) and since 1912 the state of New Mexico.

Two mysteries surround the spiral staircase in the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe: the identity of its builder and the physics of its construction.

When the Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft twenty-two feet above. Carpenters were called in to address the problem, but they all concluded access to the loft would have to be via ladder as a staircase would interfere with the interior space of the small Chapel.

Legend says that to find a solution to the seating problem, the Sisters of the Chapel made a novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth and final day of prayer, a man appeared at the Chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. Months later, the elegant circular staircase was completed, and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. After searching for the man (an ad even ran in the local newspaper) and finding no trace of him, some concluded that he was St. Joseph himself, having come in answer to the sisters' prayers.

The stairway's carpenter, whoever he was, built a magnificent structure. The design was innovative for the time and some of the design considerations still perplex experts today.

The staircase has two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support. Also, it is said that the staircase was built without nails...only wooden pegs. Questions also surround the number of stair risers relative to the height of the choir loft and about the types of wood and other materials used in the stairway's construction.

    Cooks Great

Posted by Unknown on 1st Nov 2013

Very nice quality, cooks great. Love it. Only thing, it needs to be packed with heaver box or heavier strapping tape. Mine was coming out of the box on one end when I received it. Going to order two more for Christmas presents.

LOVE our Southwest Santa Fe Design Cooking Disc

Posted by Cheryl Sellers on 13th Jun 2013

I am very pleased with the Santa Fe Cooking Plow Disc. I haven't given it to my husband yet but I know he'll love it. I've given them to my sons and they use them a lot. It's good quality and I love the horseshoe handles...we live on the farm and the design is perfect for us. I've looked at other cooking disc and they don't rate as high as the Southwest Disc ones do in my opinion. I can always trust these are the best quality.

    Not what I expected!!!!!

Posted by Stan on 19th May 2013

This disc is much heavier and nicer than what I was expecting. I had a hammered wok at one time and really enjoyed using it. I guess someone else liked it better because I no longer have it. I have not used this one yet, but I feel that it will do every thing I want, and because of its size I can cook for a few or many guests as well as a number of different items at once.

Excellent quality, rustic charm, only a handmade product could represent

Posted by Tony on 1st May 2013

Out of the box, it was heavy, rustic and tough feeling....just like I expected. Good workmanship and quality welding along with a touch of whimsy. The horseshoes are cool and representative of any person proud of their southwest background.

Fed a bunch of hungry scouts for week!

Posted by Steve K. on 15th Mar 2013

We used it for almost every meal to cook for my son's scout troop during our spring break trip. The seasoning got better with every use. Well made. We are talking about buying one for the troop.

SO NICE, I BOUGHT IT TWICE!

Posted by Roy McCarroll on 15th May 2012

My Disk works so well for everything I use it for. Especially for stir fry and Pad Thai Noodles. Excellent for blackened chicken and potatoes peppers and eggs. Sent the second to my neice in Oregon because she admired it at our house. A fine product!

    My favorite wok.

Posted by Jim Moody on 31st Aug 2011

I bought this last year. First let me state that I love the quality of this wok. I easily cook for my family of 7 (almost 8) frequently. I would have to cook 2 batches of food in my 14" wok. With the Discada it is done with one vessel. I cannot describe how great the food comes out - easy set up, easy clean up. Simply fantastic.
